Σπουδαία διάκριση για τον Μάρκους Σμαρτ, καθώς ο γκαρντ των Σέλτικς αναδείχθηκε καλύτερος αμυντικός της χρονιάς στο ΝΒΑ, μετά από σχετική ψηφοφορία.
Ο Σμαρτ συγκέντρωσε 37 βαθμούς πρώτης θέσης και συνολικά 257 βαθμούς, αφήνοντας στην δεύτερη θέση τον Μάικαλ Μπρίτζες των Σανς και στην τρίτη τον Ρούντι Γκομπέρ των Τζαζ.
Όσον αφορά τον Γιάννη Αντετοκούνμπο, βρέθηκε στην έκτη θέση με 5 βαθμούς πρώτης θέσης και συνολικά 58.
Marcus Smart is the first guard to be named NBA Defensive Player of the Year since Gary Payton in the 1995-96 season. Smart is also the second player to win the award with the @celtics, joining Kevin Garnett (2007-08).
